The opposite of indifference, written by Aysha Taryam, Editor-in-chief of The Gulf Today newspaper, will be launched at the Sharjah International Book Fair on Thursday. She will sign copies of the work at the fair at 6.30 pm.
The book will be launched in the Arabic and English languages.
The opposite of indifference is a collection of socio-political commentaries.
The book, thematically aggressive and poetic, has evoked pointed responses from luminaries like Dr Clovis Maksoud.
“Aysha’s essays in this book project summarise, with fascinating lucidity, complex social issues considered taboos to be avoided rather than addressed,” writes Maksoud in his foreword to the book.
The poetic tone of the writer is evident from lines in the introduction: “As a child I grew up in a world filled with words, I played among the whirring sounds of a printing press, instead of toys my room was filled with stacks of books and it is no surprise that the smell of ink still takes me back to those days of indifference.”
