After a very long (16) hour flight we landed at Dubai International Airport which was very, very, quiet and empty, which seems strange, and then I realized it seems so strangely quiet because it is quiet- there is no muzak being piped into the place. No announcements over the loudspeakers, nothing. Totally quiet. Just the sound of footsteps and rolling luggage.
We were escorted out and passed through customs in a second. Very nice.
Then the exciting (and very fast) ride to the hotel through Dubai to Sharjah, the next Emirate over. Our escort says nothing, just tears through the traffic and delivers us safely.
Nice room with a view and this morning at 5 am the prayer singing began from the mosque across the lagoon. Totally amazing. I waited for the sunrise and for the Sharjah skyline to appear out of the morning haze.
Giant breakfast buffet at the hotel then off to opening ceremonies (which I can’t even begin to describe adequately at the moment), more food, awards, 3D book floating on a stage…more on all that later. And then to the Book Fair where we meet some beautiful people…
…but, right now I am jetlag crashing and overwhelmed by the overall amazingness of this experience so far and must stop before I pass out.
Wow!
I’ll will return shortly.
