SHJIBF: Mohammed Achaari on poetry | Emerging Writers' Festival

“Creativity is something to be reckoned with. It is part and parcel of our communities and our lives.

Prefer novel or poetry? I don’t believe in those distinctions. Creativity is a common right which cannot be divided into pieces.

Poetry is an art, a feeling; it is the essense of writing. We do not always find poetry in the poem, we come across poetry in novels, in movies, in painting and fine arts. Poetry is a living tool that transcends the form.”

- Mohammed Achaari on poetry

Morrocan-born Mohammed Achaari’s career has gone from poetry to politics to novel writing. A literary giant, politics junkie and man of the arts, Achaari last year won the International Prize for Arabic Literature (the “Arab Booker”) for his novel The Arch and the Butterfly.
