Sharjah Ladies Club is an oasis of peace, a kind of cross between a country club, health spa and community centre. In addition to its own private beach and a no-men-allowed policy, it has some things you would expect (restaurant, gym, spa, beauty salon, day care), and some a little more unusual (art studio, ice skating rink, shooting range). They also do community work, like setting up a Family Council and running youth programs.
I visited with a group of women as a guest of Emirati writer Noura, and it was a heavenly afternoon of mint-lemon juices, lunch, coffee and chatter.
